The Archaeological Department is the oldest and largest department within the Notranjska Museum. Museum archaeologists Mehtilda Urleb, Valentin Schein, and Alma Bavdek have been responsibly fulfilling the museum's primary task throughout its history, which is to explore the Notranjska and Karst regions. Through successful excavations at various archaeological sites such as Križna gora, Šmarata, Svinja gorica near Cerknica, Unec, Šmihel pod Nanosom, Razdrto, Trnovo near Ilirska Bistrica, we have been able to piece together the settlement history from the early Stone Age to the late Middle Ages. Objects that have arrived at the museum, whether as incidental findings or gifts from individuals, and have been recognized as cultural heritage and placed within the cultural-historical context. Today, the museum's storage facilities contain tens of thousands of archaeological objects. A significant amount of time is dedicated to preserving and documenting these items. They are approached by the scientific community through professional processing and publication in various publications. The work of an archaeologist in the museum is only revealed to the general public and museum visitors through professionally supported, simple, and above all, attractive museum exhibitions that delve into the past.
